In 1913, Laura Lyons is a woman ahead of her time, trying to pursue her education in journalism while being a mother to two and married to the superintendent of the New York Public Library which affords them an apartment in the library. When valuable books go missing, Laura must evaluate her priorities or risk losing everything.
Eighty years later, Sadie Donovan struggles with the legacy of her grandmother, Laura Lyons, especially after she gets her dream job, working in the New York Public Library. But the job quickly becomes a nightmare when rare items go missing, leading Sadie to investigate which sheds new light on the library's biggest tragedy.
In this dual timeline, two generations of women are left with picking up the pieces after book thefts happen.
