Program Description

Event Details

Have you faced any of these gardening dilemmas: Buying a packet of 50 seeds or a four-pack of plants for the same price? Choosing a special variety of tomato versus taking what the box store offers? Or knowing whether the emphasis of your seedlings was on healthy roots or appealing foliage?

Join Penn State Master Gardener John Powell at Northern Tier Library for help with addressing these life quandaries. Gardening from Seed will cover buying quality seeds, preparing them for success, optimizing their growth, and ultimately transplanting them to the garden.

Registration is required.

John Powell loves the dirty jobs in the garden. He digs holes, fights thistle, spreads mulch, turns compost, and converts sod to garden. He happily leaves the pretty side of gardening to those who find their satisfaction in the fruits rather than the labor. John loves talking dirt, talking weeds, talking clay, and talking compost. Some people say he just loves talking! He had his first garden in 1958, planting marigolds in the shade. His garden successes came later, but always at the expense of turning compacted clay-ey dirt into tillable soil. John's North Hills gardens are all conversions from lawn and contain a large selection of spring bulbs, peonies, daylilies, iris, dahlias, hosta, and allium. After years of getting dirty in the garden, John became a Penn State Master Gardener in 2017.
